 Where we worked

Handmade Change is a For profit Social Enterprise, we work towards a Triple Bottom line, a viable and sustainable business, that can bring about social change and uplift communities through Design and Project management services.

We endeavor to create environments that generate demand for services and products on the one hand, and to build independent viable and sustainable capacity to supply the demand.

We us design interventions and tourism products and support, while working with indigenous knowledge, preserving fragile cultures and environments, and introducing appropriate technologies and systems. 

Hand made products and craft is the most common expression of Design in Africa, it is also one of the most accessible industries with low barriers to entry. A lot of people manufacture and batch produce a large variety of products including crafts, as part of a multi-income survival strategy that may include farming, retail, casual labour, Government grants etc.


  • We assist crafter producers with product development and production, infrastructure development, implementation of appropriate technologies and market access.
  • We mobilise designers, makers, and other experts to contribute to social development projects, empower and uplift rural communities.
  • We partner with service providers, NPO's Government departments, tourism service providers and other stakeholders to create sustainable interventions.
  • We work on viable fair trade based business models as a basis for our interventions, creating market access directly and indirectly.

 

Reading Glasses are Working Glasses

The aim of this part of our work is to provide reading glasses to people in rural communities.

Being able to see the work you need do by hand to make  a living, to count the money you transact with and material you can read to empower yourself  is life changing in itself.

Productivity and confidence is boosted ten fold, and this small intervention alone can improve a persons plight in an instant.

All donations will go towards distributing reading glasses to people in the rural communities we work with.
